When I looked up and saw this tree I just knew I had to photograph it.   I just loved the way the tree stood out from the background.   At first I’d pre-viusalised a completely different image but the more I played around with the image the more this look kept springing into my head.

In the end I just went with the creative flow and I’m so glad that I did.  Its kind of striking don’t you think?

This fine art photograph is a great example of using the camera that you have with you at the time.  I’d left my main camera in the car as I was walking through a carpark.  Rather than go back to the car I simply pulled out my iPhone 4S and grabbed the shot.

Never let the fact that you don’t have an expensive camera on you stop you from capturing a moment!

Hope you enjoy it,

Thanks,

Cottesloe Beach Glowing

Hi Everyone,

This was taken on the same night as this Cottesloe Beach sunset shot.  It was taken just as the sunset started to die out.  Look at how amazing the colours are even though the sunset was slowly starting to fade away!

I just love shooting down at Cottesloe Beach, every day is different and its always changing.   It also reminds me of when I was a little younger as I spent so much time down there.   On this particular night I had to park quite some distance away as there were heaps of people who were down at the beach and on the grass banks to watch the sunset.

This shot was taken using my Canon 16-35mm lens, Canon 1Ds MkIII, F16, ISO 100, 2 secs exposure.

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Cottesloe Sunset

Hi Everyone,

Last night I was down at Cottesloe Beach and I was provided with the most amazing Cottesloe Beach sunset of 2011.  I can’t believe how lucky I got!  It was just so intense.  It started off as a fairly subtle sunset and I was standing on the Cottesloe Groyne thinking that I wasn’t really going to come back with any magic.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.  The sun dipped below the horizon and then it started to light up different parts of the sky at different times.  One minute I was shooting towards the Indiana Teahouse and then I was shooting towards Fremantle as the light was just bouncing all around the place.  I must’ve run up and down the groyne at least four times chasing the light.

I think I actually yelled out for joy at one stage, that is how exciting it was.   If you’d like to see more images like please checkout my Australian landscape photography gallery.

Thanks,

Jamie

Fremantle Fireball

Hi Everyone,

I hope 2011 was just as an amazing year for you as it was for me and I hope that 2012 will be an even better year for you.  I’ve got some awesome projects lined up for next year and can’t wait to tackle them.  I’m going to be capturing seascape photography from some stunning locations.

Please click on the image if you’d like to see a larger version.

Recently we were provided with the most amazing sunset near Fremantle.   Everyone had left saying that there was going to be no decent sunset, but for some reason I just knew it was going to be a cracker and it was.  It was so intense, so red, that I felt like it was glowing right through me!   It was almost like the water was sizzling from heat and for a few minutes I felt like a fireball was slowly advancing upon me.   Of course all good things end and the sun quickly dipped below the horizon.

I’ll be offering this photograph in my Australian landscape photography gallery shortly.

The one big lesson I got from this Fremantle sunset was that you should never ever leave your location until the sun has well and truly set.  You just can’t predict what is going to happen no matter how good you are.

Well after two successful exhibitions this year, gaining gallery representation and heaps of great photographs captured I’m signing off for the year.

Thank you for all your support throughout the year and I can’t wait to catch up with you all in 2012!!!

Gage Roads

Hi Everyone,

Tonight I had the distinct pleasure of catching up with Paul Pichugin.   We caught up down at Cottesloe Beach and after venturing down to the rocks south of the Cottesloe Groyne we ended up on the groyne itself.  The clouds didn’t look like they were going to play ball and there weren’t many of them.

Fortunately, they picked up and soon we had some really dramatic and colourful clouds over the beach.  Just before sunset started I managed to ping off this shot of Gage Roads and the sun’s rays washing over the ships.  I honestly didn’t think I’d pulled this one off so I’m glad its turned out so well.

What do you guys think of it?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Busselton Jetty

Hi Everyone,

This is a shot of an old jetty which is next to the famous Busselton Jetty.  There are so many photos of the Busselton Jetty out there that I decided to try a different angle.  This was taken during a Spring morning and I just love the subtle pastel colours in the sky.   Each wave seems to have its own indvidual colour in this photo as well.  So cool. :-)

Hopefully its shows that a photo doesn’t have to have a multitude of elements in it to make it effective or attractive to people.   Simple compositions quite often are the best compositions of all.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

The shot was taken with a Canon 24-70mm L series lens using my Canon 1Ds MkIII.

North Cottesloe Beach

North Cottesloe Beach is one of those amazing beaches that are just simply awesome for Seascape photography.  It has a different mood almost every time you head on down there.  In fact its probably my favourite Perth beach.   If you ever see me down there make sure you say hello!

I love summer days like this as well.   You know the ones where you’ve been sweltering all day and all you want to do is head on down to the beach in the evening and take a dip to cool down.   There is nothing quite like it.   Well there probably is one better thing and that is to have a serve of fish and chips while your down there!

What is your favourite thing to do when the evenings are hot and humid?   If you’d like to see more of my images please check out my Seascape Photography or Australian landscape photography pages.

Many Thanks,

Jamie Paterson

Forest Fire

One of the bad things about summer here in Perth is that I hardly ever seem to get out and take any great photos, because there are simply no clouds.  One of the great things though is that I go through and review what photos are on my hard drive unreviewed and gathering dust.

It gives me time to dig up photos that I might have missed on  my first review of the shoot and tinker with them a little more.  There have been numerous occasions where I’ve managed to dig up some amazing shots sometimes years after taking them.  Its a great reason why you should never delete anything.  Ever!

This shot was taken in the South West of Western Australia about 3hrs from Perth.   Its been sitting on my hard drive since 2008 and I’ve only just discovered it this evening.  You can imagine my joy when I saw this photo.  I loved it and just had to work on it straight away.

Heavenly Heights

Sunday, October 30, 2011 by Jamie - No Comments

south perth, perth photos,

There is a really funny story behind this photo.  Its an old decommissioned church were I train at once a week.   As I was standing outside with the instructor he asked me, what do I look for in a photo?   I looked around, looked up and pointed at the steeple and said something like that.   I then said my goodbyes and started to head off to my car.

I’d only taken a few steps when I realised that I’d just identified a great photo and walked off without doing anything about it.  Crazy right?   I ran to the car grabbed my Fuji X100 a camera that I carry everywhere and pinged off a few shots.  I am so glad that I did as the result is a pretty cool photo.

Are there any lessons learnt out of this experience?  I think so.  Always, always take a camera with you where ever you go.  If I don’t have my normal camera I have my Fuji.  If I don’t have the Fuji X100 then I always have my iPhone 4S.   Remember the more times you are out there taking photos the luckier you get.

What are you waiting for?  Its time to get out and about and get some photos.

Thanks for reading,

Jamie Paterson
