North Cottesloe Seascape
North Cottesloe is such an amazing place to photograph, especially for a seascape photographer like me. Unfortunately, we only get to shoot it for a few months each year as it is typically covered in sand and its only when winter arrives with her storms that we get to see the rocks.
When the rocks do become exposed its often during times of big waves and dark and dramatic skies which are just awesome to capture. You have to watch out though, if you’re not quick the waves will come thundering down on you and totally drench both you and your camera! People who watch me take photos on these reefs normally have a great laugh as I rush out in between waves, throw my tripod down and focus the shot. Then the next wave comes screaming in so I have to run back off the reef. Its almost like doing an hour of physical training.
To get this shot I used the following:
Lee filter holder system
5 stop Singh Ray Graduated Neutral Density filter
Manual mode – F13, ISO400, Shutter – 2.5secs.
F/2.8 16-35mm Canon lens.

Nanup Hills
Hi Everyone
Its cold, wet, windy and rainy here in Perth so it pretty much put me in the mood to create something that was dark and contrasty with perhaps a touch of a vintage / grungy feel to it as well.
I’m pretty sure that I’ve managed to convey the mood that I’m in after experiencing our weather here. I promise I’ll post something nice and light after this one!
Thanks

North West Mangroves
Hi Everyone,
Last week I was asked to do some corporate photography for a client. It was the trip of a lifetime, one that saw me catch a number of helicopters and a Gulfstream private jet. Life doesn’t get much better! That story will follow a little later.
I was flown up to Exmouth where I hopped onto a brand new Agusta Westland AW139 helicopter and flew across to Ningaloo Reef for approx 20mins. We then tracked north to Karratha where I was able to capture numerous photos of some really nice islands as well as some cool mangroves.
This was one of many mangroves that I managed to capture. They look so spectacular from the air. Like veins in the human body reach out to the outer extremities of our body. The water is nearly always a magnificent deep green or blue. I will share more of these photos as they get processed.
To get these shots nice and crisp I used the following settings: TV 1/2000th ISO 40. If you have any questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Trigg Beach Surf
Escape to what you enjoy!
I love capturing surfers in this way rather than having them crystal clear in the photograph. It seems to me that by capturing them like this its easier to focus on the emotions that they are feeling rather than looking at the photo itself.
What do you think? Do you agree or would you prefer to see them in focus? To get this style of photo I use TV mode on my camera and set it for 1/4 of a sec. Then as the surfer moves down the wave I follow him by panning sideways and try to match his speed.
Surfing is about experiencing a feeling of freedom of escaping from your troubles on the land and funnily enough shooting like this gives me exactly the same kind of feeling!

I hope you enjoy it.

The Path
Hi Everyone,
How are you all? I hope you’re having a fantastic weekend. I managed to get this shot last weekend from my 2 day mini road trip. It was actually from my last stop.
I was trying to give a really dark and ethereal mood to this photo and hopefully I’ve managed to achieve it. I wanted to show a bright path leading into darkness to try and articulate that in darkness there is always a path.
This shot was actually taken in the middle of the day in full sunlight. So I had to convert it into black and white and then uses lots of curves and layers to get this effect.
I hope you enjoy it,
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson

Lomography Experiment
Learn to love learning. You never know what will come of it.
I’ve spent all weekend tinkering with Photoshop trying out new some new techniques and slick ninja moves! A fellow photographer Steve Coleman was kind enough to share a link on how to create a lomographic effect on a photo, so I thought I would give it a try.
I do have a holga camera but I didn’t take it on this particular occasion so I thought I’d try this new technique on this photo of my favourite place. Injidup Beach.
I think it turned out really well and certainly achieved the effect I was looking for. What do you guys think of it?
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
Its A Beautiful Day
Every day is a beautiful day. Enjoy each one!
I’ve just spent six amazing hours driving along our coast line getting some amazing shots. Six glorious hours of stopping off at beaches and walking along the sand with the waves splashing at my feet. Kids were jumping in the water (don’t they know who cold the water is?), people were fishing and couples were walking along the beach hand in hand.
I just simply love days like this one and so it seems, does everyone else.
Thanks,
Jamie Paterson
