The Basin

The Basin, Rottnest Island, Western Australia, Australian Landscape Photography

I love this photo, its from The Basin at Rottnest Island and for many West Australians it holds a very special place in their hearts. Every year young children venture on down to The Basin at Rottnest Island for the first time and head into the safe water of The Basin for their often first swim in the ocean.

During summer this place is full of parents and kids splashing around and having a great time. In fact this place is nearly always safe to swim in. If you look at the water here its almost entirely smooth even though a massive storm is heading through. No wonder parents love this place. As a landscape photographer I’m always looking for new angles to take and though I didn’t manage this time, I’m still really happy with this photo as The Basin is normally portrayed in australian landscape photography as being an idylic location with lots of sunshine and blue skies. Here I’ve managed to capture The Basin in a different light.

I hope you guys enjoy this photograph as much as I enjoyed taking it. If you’d like to see the photo in a larger format, just click on it.

Hi Everyone,

This is easily one of my most favourite photos from this year so far. I just love the reflections in the water down by my feet and I love the wave crashing onto the reef as well. Its just awesome when a shot like this comes together, it makes all the waiting worthwhile. Australian landscape photography is all the more enjoyable when after hours and hours of waiting sometimes over weeks you capture ‘the shot’.

I’d been hitting this beach for a couple of weeks waiting for the right kind of light along with the right tide and the right conditions. You can imagine how happy I was when I saw the scene before me. Perfect light, perfect waves and perfect conditions!

Ocean and Earth

australian landscape photography, australian seascape photography,

How cool is this shot? When I saw this on the back of my camera I just knew that I had managed to capture gold. I had been shooting for about 20mins when I saw a rain squall coming and I knew that I was going to have to wrap up shooting pretty quickly. This shot was the last shot that I managed to capture of the night and I just couldn’t wait to get home and get it onto my computer to see what it looked like on a big screen.

You can imagine the smile on my face when I saw it on my computer.

Hope you enjoy it, all of these images can be bought via my online shop at http://jamiepaterson.com

On The Edge

I’ve been having heaps of fun lately hitting the beaches of Perth and getting some amazing seascape and landscape photographs. If you find the right bunch of rocks on the right tide at the right time of day, you can get some fantastic shots even right here in Perth. To get this shot I walked almost right out onto the edge of the reef and had to make sure that no waves came thumping through to give my camera a soaking. I did have a couple of close calls where I had to hold the tripod above my head whilst I got wet up to my waist but my camera stayed extremely dry. Phew!!!

I’d love to know what you guys think of this photo.

Thanks,

Reef Streaks

Well my last seascape photo was really simple but this one is really complex. There is just so much going on with this one. There is the awesome clouds going on, then there is the water streaking along the rocks as well as the wave crashing into the rocks. This shot was heaps of fun to take though I did get drenched.

I had to time it so that there were no big waves coming through when I was taking my photos. It seemed like everytime I would setup the camera a big wave would actually come crashing through, so in the end I would run out and slam the tripod down, get a quick auto focus, get my shot and then run back out of the waves way. At least I was getting fit!

Australian Seascape Photography – Simplicity

cape naturaliste, australian seascape photography, seascape photography, seascapes, coastal photography,

I’ve stared at this seascape photo for ages. It captivates me and calms me and I was trying to work out why. Finally it dawned on me, its captures me because of its simplicity. Its not complicated but it draws you in. I’m definitely printing this photo out and putting it in my house as its a favourite.

That’s all I’m going to say about this post, after all its about simplicity!

Hi Everyone,

I’m really excited. Recently I was contacted by the Utah Museum of Natural History as they wanted to place this photo of the Lancelin sand dunes on permanent display in one of their exhibitions. Of course I agreed to have my image displayed at such a prestigious institution.

It should be up on display shortly.

Hi Everyone,

I managed to capture this shot quite some months ago and I keep looking at it all the time. I love it. Its no secret that the ocean captivates me, its a living breathing thing that is just so immense. What keeps grabbing my eye in this photo is the ledge that I’m standing over. Its not very often that this site is calm enough for people to do this which makes it a unique photo in itself. The colours and atmosphere of the photo grabs me as well, its just such a serene photo.

I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do.
