Blackwall Reach Sunset
Hi Everyone,
Last night we were extremely fortunate to experience one of those amazing colourful sunsets that seemed to just last forever. They hardly ever happen here in Perth and it always seems like when they do I never have my camera with me! Well I started off down at North Cottesloe despite my promise that I wasn’t going to take any wave photos this week, I could see my shot but I really wanted to shoot somewhere else. I love my wave photos, in fact I’m obsessed by them, but I still like to show that I can shoot other subjects just as well.
I headed down to a place called Point Walter instead and knew that was where I was going to take my photos at sunset time, I also knew of this spot which is only 2mins down the road so I developed my plan. Get some shots of these boats and just before sunset duck over to Point Walter and start getting my sunset shots from there. I’m pretty sure I managed to pull it off. I hope you like this photo as much as I do and the shots of the amazing sunset are up next.

Fremantle Harbour Ships
Is there anything more exciting than traveling in a helicopter? Yes there is. Its traveling in a helicopter with the door off and a camera in your hand. A few months ago I chartered a helicopter for an hour and headed out to Rottnest Island, on the way out there I asked the pilot if we could head over the harbour so that I could get some shots of the ships. Fortunately, he agreed and I managed to get quite a few decent shots that I was really happy with.
Landscape photography from the air can be so much easier, just think no long walks or driving long distances. If you’ve ever thought of chartering one you should do. There are a few things you should consider if you’re going to do it:
- Obviously use a reputable helicopter company
- Before you get in the air you should be talking to the company to find out exactly how much air time you need to reach your goal. Don’t try and take on too much in the air otherwise it will cost you a fortune and you probably won’t get what you want.
- Talk to the pilot a few days in advance to make sure he knows what you want. Remember this is all about you.
- Sit on the same side as the pilot. That way you’re both seeing the same thing.
- Enjoy the trip!

Bennion Beach Sunset
Last weekend we had lots of rain here in Perth. It just came down hard and fast and I must admit I was seriously considering not heading out and staying at home where it was nice and warm. After deciding to ‘toughen up’ I headed out to the beaches to try and get some wild wave action.
I headed to Bennion Beach, if you get there on a good day its really easy to get fantastic seascape photos. To get photos like this I normally try and wait for the water start receding before I take a shot. I find that as the water is retreating it creates a really nice streaky effect.
Right after this shot the rain came in again and I had to run back up to the car to stop myself and my camera from getting soaked!
Hope you enjoy it,

Cape Naturaliste Sunset
Relieved! That is all I could say about this photo. I had driven for almost 3hrs to get this shot on a Friday afternoon and I was worried the whole time that it was going to be a wasted drive. I’m glad to say that obviously it wasn’t a wasted trip. Its so easy to get epic seascape photographs like this one in the South West corner of Western Australia. The rocks are huge and the waves are even bigger so its hard to go wrong.
I was actually walking back to the car when I saw this, and I almost missed out. When I turned around and saw this I had to get all all my gear out again as there was no way I wasn’t going to capture this! So what was the lesson? Always turn around and have a look behind no matter where you are and never write off the sunset until the sun has actually set.
Hope you enjoy this photo,

There is nothing quite like the feeling of watching the last of a day slip away when you’re standing on a remote beach all by yourself. On this particular night it was cold, wet and rainy but it was still a great night to be out. I had driven 2.5hrs just to get to this spot and Mother Nature didn’t disappoint.
I always turn back as I’m walking away when I’m finished and I’m glad I did on this occasion. Why? Well, I had actually packed up all my gear and was walking down the beach back to the car. When I saw this scene unfold in front of me I had to act quickly to set my camera up again and catch the moment before it disappeared!

Cape Naturaliste
Hi Everyone,
After a crazy week I decided to head down to Dunsborough which is 2.5hrs south of Perth here in Western Australia to head out to some remote beaches and relax. I’m so glad I did. I drove down a remote track and then left the car and headed down a bush track until I got to the top of some small limestone cliffs. After a quick scramble down the cliffs I was on the beach and I felt like I was back home.
I managed to get to the beach only 10 minutes before the sun was due to set, so I had to literally run up and down the beach trying to find a great spot. I managed to find two spots within easy reach of each other and decided to setup at this spot first. I always make sure I have two spots to shoot just in case the first one doesn’t work out for me.
I timed this shot so that a big wave (and they were big) would be crashing in the background whilst the water in the foreground was swirling around the rocks in the foreground. I was pretty happy with this shot after I saw it appear on my camera screen. It was certainly worth the effort heading down south! The other thing about this photo is that I had actually been visualizing this shot all week, in other words I had already seen this shot before I even took it. Its something you guys should work on when taking photos. If you see them before you even take them you have a much better chance of getting the shot you actually wanted.
Hope you guys enjoy it,
